The Good Shepherd

Written by Martha C. Sarvis, C.S

We find in Miscellaneous Writings by Mary Baker Eddy, “…infinite Principle, with its universal manifestation, is all that really is or can be; hence God is our Shepherd. He guards, guides, feeds, and folds the sheep of His pasture; and their ears are attuned to His call.” (Mis 150:29–2)

Shepherds guard their sheep from attack by animals. They also check a field for poisonous plants and remove them before the sheep are allowed to feed. God is all, and God is good. So, acknowledging God as our Shepherd destroys all evil. The fact of God’s omnipresence and omnipotence leaves no place for evil to exist. We are guarded from every attack of evil thoughts and safe from any poisoning thought when we acknowledge God as the only presence and power and admit only God’s thoughts into our consciousness.

Shepherds guide their sheep through rough terrain, and if a sheep falls into a deep place, the shepherd lifts them out. God guides us through rough places in our experience. If we fall into a well of self-pity and despair, God’s loving guidance lifts us up

Shepherds feed their sheep with fresh green grass. God guides us to fresh inspiration each day. These inspired ideas feed and sustain our spiritual growth.

At night, the shepherd brings the sheep into a safe fold where they can rest without interruption. God, our heavenly Shepherd, enfolds us in divine Love. We rest, day and night, in God’s love.

The sheep recognize the voice of their shepherd. If several flocks are in the same field and one shepherd calls to his sheep, only the sheep belonging to that shepherd follow him. We are God’s sheep. We recognize the voice of God when we are tuned into God through prayer. We follow God’s leading, and it always results in good.

Green Pastures Christian Science Nurses are guided, guarded, fed, and enfolded in God’s love as they lovingly support and acknowledge God’s shepherding care of each client.
